Interactive Image Information System for Teaching and Research at ETH Zurich

As a part of the ETH World infostructure, a picture information system will be created, centrally managed and accessible to all ETH World users by a Web browser. The documents are going to be indexed by using scientifically controlled metadata. Thereby a high quality picture database is created, which also can be used as an important information source for the search engine developed for the ETH World project Advanced Querying and Coordination of Multimedia Information.

The first step is to find an interface between the Web and the search engine for the existing picture databases of the ETH Library. Beside indexed searching, the interface should be able to handle the most important functions of the system with a standard Web browser - from searching to ordering, as well as entering new pictures and producing picture collections for teaching. As an initial project, an interactive online picture database, as part of teaching and research, is going to be tested in a course by the Institute for History and Theory of Architecture (GTA) (Prof. W. Oechslin and Prof. A. Tönnesmann) and Stiftung Bibliothek Werner Oechslin in Einsiedeln. The pictures and the picture collections will be accessible online via WWW for the GTA course participants for their scientific work.
